What is Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)?
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an advanced interventional procedure designed to provide long-lasting relief for patients experiencing chronic neck, back, or joint pain. This treatment is particularly effective for individuals whose pain originates from specific nerves. By utilizing electrical currents produced by radio waves to heat specific nerve tissues, RFA aims to decrease pain signals from that area. While the technique can be applied to different body parts, it’s frequently used for spinal pain, especially from the facet joints.

How does the treatment work?
• The treatment is performed in a medical office and typically takes 30 minutes to an hour.• The skin over the treatment area (usually the back or neck) is cleaned and sterilized to prevent infection.• A local anesthetic is applied to numb the skin and tissues where the needle will be inserted.• Using fluoroscopy imaging (real-time X-ray), the doctor will guide a thin hollow needle to the targeted area of the pain (often near a nerve).• Once the needle placement is confirmed, you will receive a numbing medication, a small radiofrequency (RF) probe is inserted, and a heating current is passed through the needle to create a slight burn about the size of a cotton swab tip. • The RF probe sends controlled heat (radiofrequency energy) to the nerve, effectively disrupting its ability to send pain signals to the brain.• You can usually resume normal activities, though some doctors may advise you to avoid strenuous activity for a short time.
What to Expect After Treatment?
• Mild Discomfort: Some soreness, tenderness, or aching at the treatment site is common and may last a few days. • Local anesthesia effects: The numbing medication used during the procedure may cause temporary numbness in the area, but this will wear off in a few hours.• Temporary Pain Increase: You might experience an initial increase in pain as the local anesthetic wears off, but this typically subsides within a few hours to a day.• Swelling or Bruising: Mild swelling or bruising around the treatment area is possible but generally resolves within a few days. • Ice and Pain Relief: If discomfort persists, apply ice to the treated area and take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Motrin) as directed.• Gradual Pain Relief: Pain relief from radiofrequency ablation may take a few days to a week as the nerve’s ability to transmit pain signals is reduced.• Limited Activity: To allow for proper healing, avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or vigorous physical exercise for a few days to a week.• Improvement Over Time: Many patients experience significant pain relief within 1-2 weeks, with full benefits becoming more noticeable after 3-4 weeks. • Long-Term Relief: RFA can relieve pain for several months to a year or more, depending on the individual. However, as nerves regenerate over time, the procedure may need to be repeated. • Treatment Goals/Healing: Depending on the specific treatment goals and patient needs, at a later date, stem cells or a combination of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and stem cells may be utilized, promoting regeneration and overall healing. • Follow-up Appointments: Your healthcare provider may schedule follow-up visits to evaluate your pain levels and determine if additional treatments are necessary.• Monitor Pain Changes: Track improvements in pain and mobility to determine how well the radiofrequency ablation has reduced your symptoms.
